On Tuesday, Serbia is set to host Saudi Arabia at the TSC Arena in Backa Topola for an international friendly match.
Both teams are eager to recover from significant losses in their opening games of the March international window.
Serbia, a participant in four of the last five World Cup tournaments, will have to wait another four years for their next chance to compete on the world stage. They missed out on qualification last year, finishing third in Group K with a record of four wins, one draw, and three losses, accumulating 13 points. This left them 11 points behind group leaders England and just one point shy of Albania, who progressed to the playoffs.
Veljko Paunovic, who took charge just before the final two qualifiers, had limited influence on the team's failure, overseeing a 2-0 loss to England and a 2-1 victory against Latvia.
Serbia's 2026 qualifying campaign began poorly with a 3-0 defeat to reigning European champions Spain at the Estadio de la Cerรกmica, a venue where Paunovic's former club, Real Oviedo, also lost 2-0 six months earlier.
The 48-year-old coach, who was dismissed from his club position in October, will lead his national team in their inaugural match against Saudi Arabia, aiming for consecutive victories on home turf.
In contrast, Saudi Arabia has secured a spot as one of the 48 teams in the upcoming 2026 World Cup, which will take place in Canada, Mexico, and the USA.
